Books

In the Self-Help department, you only need two:

Carnegie, Dale - How to Stop Worrying and Start Living

This is a wonderful book, published in the 1930s by the same author who brought you How to Win Friends and Influence People. I was raised to scoff at him by a generation that saw him as a manipulative salesman. But when I finally read this book, I was blown away. He not only perfectly articulated most of what I had suffered for years, but gave practical and insightful ways of dealing with both anxiety and depression. More than any other thing, including counseling, this book turned my life around. His theories have been mis-used in counselling settings for two generations. This is the real thing, though, and it's good.

It was written in the 1930s, by a man who was already in his late 40s or so, so the language might be a little remote for a significantly younger generation. He does make reference to faith in God, but even if you aren't into that, you can still derive benefit from it. You may not know a lot of the people he's talking about, or that he quotes. But it's still a miraculous book. If you can't find it, let me know and I'll find a way to get it to you.

Hope and Help For Your Nerves

This book explains a lot about the physiology of anxiety and depression in very simple terms. The author, an Australian woman, walks the reader through the process by which a person becomes "nervously ill" and then explains, very simply, how to get out of it. Once again, as with Dale, it's hard to find it, but if you want it, we can get it to you...

YOU DON"T NEED ANY OTHER BOOKS.

And you certainly don't need to watch talk shows, television infomercials…
Beware of those who make money from other people's misery…
