Born Pancoast, Fayette County, Ohio, 1/6/1861, son of Alvan L. and Evaline H (Leach) Messmore: educated in public schools, London, OH and high school in St. Louis. Married in St. Louis, 10/18/1893 to Eliza A. March. Began business career as a clerk for W. P. Richard and Co. 1876-80; travelling salesman for Cromby, Elsnore and Co. 1880-82 and for Rosenbaum Brothers, Chicago, 1882-85 - embarked in grain business w/William Blair of Dutz, PA in 1885, in firm of Blair and Messmore; travelling salesman for H. and L. Chase Bag Company, 1887-91; formed, 1891, firm of J. L. Messmore and Co., grain, which, Feb 1892, was succeeded by present firm of Ballard, Messmore and Co., grain commission merchants. Member Merchants Exchange, Ohio Society of St. Louis (directior), Society for Promotion of St. Louis Art. Republican. Member Tuscan Lodge, A. F. and A. M. Clubs: St. Louis, Glen Echo County. Office: 520 Chamber of Commerce. Residence: 5848 Von Versen Avenue.
